The story of Lambda Chapter’s revitalization and influence

At Grand Valley State University (GVSU), where Greek life may occasionally seem like a small corner on campus, one chapter is proving that you don’t need a large roster to leave a significant effect. As we celebrate Founders’ Week under the theme “Phenomenally Us,” we honor the strength, leadership, and community-building efforts of the sisters of Lambda Chapter. Their story is more than one of existence, but of a purposeful revitalization that has transformed the chapter into a shelter for its community.

The impact of one phenomenal woman.

The journey of the revitalized Lambda Chapter started with the singular determination of Frieda "Ariella" Campos, who joined in the summer of 2023. While working through the complexities of university administration and organizational requirements during her senior year, Frieda single-handedly established the basis for the chapter’s future.

She was building the foundation of a chapter she knew she would soon pass on. When Rosa "Alitzel" Argueta crossed in the spring of 2024, the torch was passed, but the bond remained intact. As Frieda graduated, she transitioned into the role of chapter liaison, providing the mentorship Rosa needed to find her footing as a new leader. Together, they managed the hurdles of a "Neo year," balancing the professional demands of the university with the well-established sisterhood of Delta Tau Lambda Sorority, Inc.

Small but Mighty: Building a safe space

For Lambda Chapter, leadership isn’t about being the biggest group, but about making a real difference. Rosa and Frieda saw early on that their goal was more than just being another Greek organization. They wanted to create a safe space for first-generation students and the Latino community at GVSU.

“We really wanted to make a point of building our relationships with other students to secure our spot on campus,” Rosa reflects. By focusing on real connections, the chapter became a welcoming place for students facing the challenges of being away from home and dealing with college life.

Salute to Latinas: A night of reflection and pride

All their hard work came together at Lambda’s first official in 9 years Salute to Latinas since the chapter’s renewal. The event, with the theme "Sin Raíces, No Hay Alas” (With out Roots, There’s no Wings) gave the community a chance to reflect and connect.

The success of the evening was a testament to the chapter's increasing influence. Rosa recalls her shock and pride at the turnout: “I was so shocked at how many people knew about us... Oh, my community is here, and they are seeing us”. The event brought together not just students, but faculty, DTL alumnae and families, illustrating that the impact of a small chapter can spread across an entire institution.

A phenomenal future

Today, Lambda Chapter acts as a reflection of what it signifies to lead with bravery and compassion. The journey from revitalization for sustainability was not easy, but it was necessary. Through mentorship, collaboration, and an persistent commitment to their pillars, the sisters have ensured that Lambda is far more than a chapter, but a foundation that will support generations of leaders to come.

When Rosa thinks back to the early planning and long nights of hard work, she sees how much the chapter has grown. Lambda Chapter reminds us that being Phenomenally Us means supporting your community, respecting those who came before, and paving the way for future members.
